Lifetime of Earnings Insufficient for UK Employees to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Report Reveals

According to recent analysis, the median earner in the UK would have to work half a century of earnings to achieve the wealth level of the richest 10% of the population.

Expanding Wealth Gap Through the Years

This research reviewed financial assets information from the 2020-22 timeframe and found that back in 2006-08, it would have needed 38 years' worth of average worker salary to enter the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

An economic expert part of the analysis observed: "Financial divides in Britain are now so large that a average worker setting aside their entire income during their working years would still not be able to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."

Measuring the Financial Disparity

The research discovered that the gap between the net worth of the typical individual and an individual in the richest segment was £1 million in the pre-crisis period, but had expanded to £1.3m in actual value by recent times.

The economist continued: "These differences are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is limited – individuals who begin life well-off tend to remain affluent, and the opposite holds true."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the financial disparity widening in specific figures, the percentage of total wealth in the UK owned by the richest households – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," as stated in the study.

During this period, total wealth in the UK surged from thrice the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Drivers of Wealth Inequality

Referred to as "automatic" increases, via increasing property values and variations in pension valuations, were the primary factors of the expanding economic divide over the past decade, as stated in the report.

These gains tended to accrue to elderly homeowners, the study demonstrates – intensifying the generational financial disparity.

Intergenerational Financial Divides

The median economic difference between people in their early 30s and sixty-somethings grew by more than 100% in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135,000 in pre-financial crisis, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Variations

Additionally, there were pronounced area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in recent years standing at £290k in the SE of England, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, versus £110k in the NE of England.

Health Crisis Years Effects

Throughout the COVID period, when countless laborers were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the statistics indicate numerous families were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, however. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (from 2019 to 2022), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the median home in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
